MIRAMAR, Fla. – A man was arrested Thursday, months after he threatened a 7-Eleven clerk with an ax when she refused to sell him a pack of cigarettes, authorities said.

Police said Y'Mari Dowdell, 20, got angry and began cursing at an employee after she refused to sell him a pack of cigarettes unless he could show her his ID.

Police said Dowdell told her that he would go to his truck to get his ID, but returned holding an ax.

Dowdell's companion intervened, yelling, "No! No! No! What are you doing?" and the two left in a white Ford pickup truck that was towing a trailer with tree trimmings, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, a counselor with the Covenant House later contacted the Miramar Police Department and said that Dowdell had attempted to obtain residency at their shelter.

The counselor said Dowdell admitted during the vetting process to being the person on the news with an ax at the 7-Eleven.

Because of the Covenant House's policy, Dowdell was denied acceptance from the shelter until his legal matter with Miramar police was rectified, the arrest report stated.

Police said Dowdell made arrangements to turn himself in, but never did.

He was eventually arrested in Fort Lauderdale on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
