Man fatally shot while barbecuing at cookout in Pompano Beach

Suspect arrested after crash on I-95 in Fort Lauderdale

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man who was barbecuing during a family cookout was fatally shot Thursday night after an argument with another man in Pompano Beach, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said.

Donel Bostick, 46, of Miami, was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Trevor Mitchell, 46, of Pompano Beach, at 220 NW 15th Place.

"That was a senseless murder that should have never happened," Mitchell's father, Wallace Mitchell, said.

Bostick and Trevor Mitchell, who detectives said grew up together, were arguing just before Bostick pulled out a gun and shot Mitchell, BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said.

The barbecue grill was still smoking when deputies arrived.

According to a witness, the gunman was so enraged that he unloaded his entire clip on Mitchell, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the cookout was for a friend who had recently lost a loved one.

Bostick fled south on Interstate 95 after the shooting before crashing near the Davie Boulevard exit in Fort Lauderdale, Oglesby said.

Donel Bostick is accused of fatally shooting Trevor Mitchell during a cookout in Pompano Beach.

"The suspect initially relented and did not want to get out of his vehicle," Oglesby said. "There was a shot fired. However, he was not shooting at law enforcement officers. He was finally coaxed out of his vehicle and taken into custody."

Mitchell's father told Local 10 News that he feels "empty" after losing his son.

"I feel like my world (is) gone," Wallace Mitchell said.

Trevor Mitchell's family is now preparing to bury their loved one.

"Trevor was a wonderful nephew," his aunt, Janice Rolle, said. "He was one (who) I could really depend on, and I'm truly going to miss him."

Detectives were interviewing witnesses and investigating what led to the argument.

"It's just sad," neighbor Connie James said. "We really need to stop killing one another, because that's all we got, is each other. Black, white, we need to stop."
