DAVIE, Fla. - Davie Police Department detectives on Wednesday released a sketch of a man accused of trying to abduct a girl by luring her with money.
A 10-year-old girl told police officers that she was riding home from school on her bicycle when a man driving a blue van approached her near the intersection of Southwest 38th Court and Southwest 61st Avenue in Davie.
According to Maj. Dale Engle, the girl said he offered to give her $20 if she got in the van. She told police officers that she declined his offer and rode away as fast as she could.
"This girl has got a phenomenal memory, and she was very descriptive in the suspect himself and also was able to say that she really believes that this was an older-model Dodge Caravan, probably early 2000's model, and it had a dent in the driver's door. So she was really observant, which was really helpful to us," Engle said.
Parents said that with several schools in the area, there needs to be more security present because that outcome could have been worse.
In the meantime, they are taking all precautionary measures.
"It’s important that people keep their children more close to them," one parent, Dawn Lemoine, said.
"Parents need to be aware of what their kids are doing," Engle said. "They need to listen to their kids when something doesn't seem right."
Detectives were asking anyone with information about the man to call them at 954-693-8270 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
