51-year-old suspect detained for questioning

BIG PINE KEY, Fla. – Monroe County Sheriff's Office detectives questioned a 51-year-old man early Wednesday, who they believe stabbed another man overnight on Big Pine Key.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Sgt. Evan Calhoun responded to reports of a fight just after midnight on Cunningham Lane.

Herrin said Calhoun found the 34-year-old victim in front of a house with what appeared to be a stab wound to the abdomen.

Two more deputies were called as backup, and the suspect was detained for questioning.

Herrin said the suspect is the live-in boyfriend of the victim's mother, who was also present when the stabbing occurred.

Herrin said the woman told deputies that the two men got into a fight, during which the victim was stabbed with a pocket knife.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

He is listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing, Herrin said.
