MIAMI - A standoff in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood ended with the suspect surrendering, according to police.
Miami police said they were called Thursday morning to an apartment building off Northwest 13th Avenue and Northwest Second Street for a loud music complaint. When officers arrived, the suspect fired at the officers from inside the apartment, causing them to retreat, authorities said.
"They knocked on a door and that's when shots were fired," Officer Christopher Bess said.
An officer fell during that time, injuring their shoulder, according to police.
The man then barricaded himself inside his apartment, according to officers. Initial reports from officers indicated their was a woman taken hostage, but that was later found to be untrue.
Bess said officers escorted neighbors out of the building during the incident to make sure everyone was safe.
"We did learn that he is a military veteran and the rifle that he used was a high-powered rifle. Therefore, we did everything in our nature to make sure the neighbors -- the surrounding neighbors were safe," Bess said.
A SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called out, and the man was eventually persuaded to turn himself in without incident, Bess said.
The suspect was taken away in an ambulance. His identity was not immediately released.
