Overtown town hall kicks off #MyFutureMyChoice campaign

After 6-year-old King Carter's death, issue of gun violence comes to forefront

MIAMI – Some 400 people turned out to The Lyric Theater in Miami's Overtown for a community town hall on Friday night.

A panel of community leaders discussed the possible causes and solutions to the problem of gun violence that is prevalent among young African-American boys in poor neighborhoods.

The event kicked off the "#MyFutureMyChoice" campaign. Local 10 News President Bert Medina said he wants to turn the campaign into a ray of hope.

Local 10 News anchors Calvin Hughes and Laurie Jennings said that the focus of the campaign is to empower community activism and change through creative solutions. The response on social media was positive, as the campaign's hash tag was trending on Twitter.

If the situation continues, gun violence will kill at least a dozen more minors this year in Miami-Dade County. Let the campaign inspire you and take action. Your community needs you.
