13-year-old boy shot in foot in Little Havana

MIAMI – A 13-year-old boy was shot in the foot early Monday in Miami, police said.

The shooting was reported on Northwest 13th Avenue near Northwest Third Street in Little Havana.

Two people who live in the area told Local 10 News reporter Madeleine Wright that they heard about 10 rapid gunshots and then heard tires screeching.

Both said this was the third time in a week that they have heard gunshots in their neighborhood.

Miami police said the victim was shot in the foot and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bullet holes could also be seen in two nearby homes and a car.

Startled neighbors said they took cover during the shooting.

"The kids came running inside my room, talking about that they were scared," Cindy Casco said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

"It's scary, and I feel like we have to move because I have a little kid also in the house," Estella Rodriguez said.

Another teenager was also shot in the area of Northwest 86th Street and Fifth Ave, according to Miami-Dade County Public School officials. However, Miami-Dade police and City of Miami police said they did not respond to a shooting on Fifth Avenue.

MDCPS superintendent Alberto Carvalho condemned both shootings, as well as the killing of a 4-year-old girl, whose body was found in a dumpster.

"Attacks on our community's youth must end," Carvalho posted on Twitter early Monday. "Two teens shot overnight, & the body of a precious little girl found in dumpster. Heartbreaking."

Carvalho confirmed that the victim who was shot in the foot is a student in his district.

"The community needs to come together to do much more than they're doing right now," he said.
