Police arrest 22-year-old man in connection with nuclear engineer's stabbing

2 arrested, 2 detained after stabbing at Halloween party

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police officers arrested a 22-year-old man Friday in the fatal stabbing of a nuclear engineer who worked at Turkey Point, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

After an argument at a house party at 15711 SW 147 St., Alexander Restrepo was on his way out when someone stabbed him several times, according to Detective Jennifer Capote. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue found him bleeding from his chest and back in the front yard lawn Oct. 21.

Restrepo, 33, died at Jackson Memorial Hospital South. He was a graduate of the University of Florida and was an employee at Turkey Point's nuclear generating station. Restrepo's brother, Christopher Restrepo, was wounded in the arm during the attack.

"He did not deserve to die that way," Restrepo's mom Amparo Restrepo said.

Police officers arrested  Edwin Rios, 24, Thursday and Alejandro Esteban Tapia, 22, on Friday. Detectives detained two others and were also questioning them Friday. Tapia faced second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges.

"He saved my life, because he was fighting off, I don't know how many guys, for me to be able to get away," Christopher Restrepo said.

Rio's attorney, Peter Heller, said he denied the detective's request to interview Rios, but his client was still arrested. He called for an emergency hearing on Monday. Records show Rios was on probation over felony charges up until last year.

"Just somebody come forward and give us information to catch these low-life thugs that took my brother's life," Madeline Restrepo said.

Detectives were asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
