Driver tried to hit officers with SUV before being shot in Hallandale Beach, police say

All officers are OK, Broward County PBA president says

A reckless driver led Hollywood police on a chase Friday morning into Hallandale Beach before they were forced to shoot him, authorities said.

Sky 10 was above North Federal Highway about 9:45 a.m. as police blocked off the road from Hallandale Beach Boulevard to Pembroke Park.

Police said authorities were called shortly before 8:30 a.m. about a reckless driver on North Federal Highway in the area of Sheridan Street.

Officers caught up to the driver at Johnson Street and attempted to pull over the vehicle.

Authorities said the driver fled south on Federal Highway into the city of Hallandale Beach.Ā

At one point, he stopped and then tried to hit officers with the car as they approached him, authorities said.

Police said the driver continued south on Federal Highway and stopped at Northeast Sixth Street.

A second confrontation ensued and officers fired at the driver, killing him, authorities said.

A source told Local 10 News reporter Jeff Weinsier that the suspect nearly struck a pedestrian and struck two police cars.Ā

A witness said she was sitting at a bus stop when she heard about 10 gunshots and ran for cover.

"I was sitting at a bus stop across from, I guess it would be Sixth Street, and I seen like eight police cars come and turn down," she said. "And they were Hollywood police, which was strange because we're in Hallandale, and then the next thing I hear is, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.' And I dove behind the bus bench and I seen more police, and more police and more police."Ā

Weinsier said the body appeared to be inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was boxed in by two police vehicles.

Police said they are trying to find a witness who might have been in a vehicle that was struck in the back by the Jeep. Police said the witness is a Hispanic man who was in a 2008 or 2009 Dodge caravan with blue-tinted windows.Ā

The president of the Broward County Police Benevolent Association, Jeff Marino, said all officers are OK.

"Everybody is safe and sound. Thank God," he said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Officials from the State Attorney's Office were also at the scene after the shooting.Ā

The FDLEĀ is investigating the fatal shooting. Police said the FDLEĀ requested that Broward Sheriff's Office crime scene technicians process the scene.Ā

The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified. Authorities said they have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol after a police-involved shooting.Ā
