Police shoot man who allegedly shot, killed wife in Hollywood

Unidentified man now hospitalized

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Hollywood police shot and injured a man who they say killed his wife early Wednesday.

The shooting was reported at 3:15 a.m. at a home on North 72nd Avenue and Cleveland Street, which led to a SWAT situation.

Police said the man called 911 and told a dispatcher that he shot and killed his wife while she was on a bed in the home. Shortly after, the bed was set on fire.

According to the president of Broward County Police Benevolent Association, Jeff Marano, the man said he was armed with a handgun and would kill any officer who showed up at the scene.

Police said the unidentified man was shot after a confrontation.

He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

His wife, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marano said an attorney was speaking with the officer involved in the shooting.

"He's shook up but doing OK," Marano said about the officer.

It's unclear why the man allegedly killed his wife. Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez said the police department responded to more than 5,000 domestic violence calls last year.

"Half of our homicides last year were domestic," Sanchez said. "Even though we made over 600 arrests last year for domestic violence, we see that this is an ongoing issue and we have to do better as a society."

Sanchez said detectives are looking into whether this case was a suicide-by-cop attempt.
