According to a Boca Raton police report, McGilvary drove off with the 2016 Maserati Gran Turismo, valued at $150,000, during a test drive. A salesman at the Fort Lauderdale dealership said McGilvary asked him if he could test drive the car by taking it to the Boca Raton Resort & Club, where his girlfriend was staying.

When McGilvary arrived at the resort, he asked the valet supervisor to "keep the car warm" while he took the salesman to show him his father's boat, the report said.

McGilvary and the salesman walked to the dock, but there was no boat. McGilvary then told the salesman that he would be right back while he went to get his girlfriend, but after about 30 minutes passed, the salesman returned to the valet and noticed that the Maserati was gone, the report said.

The valet supervisor told him that McGilvary got into the car alone and drove away.

It didn't take police long to track down McGilvary, since the salesman still had McGilvary's driver's license.

When police met with McGilvary at a Starbucks the next day, he told them that his wallet and cellphone were stolen days earlier while he was on the beach in Deerfield Beach. After he was asked if the valet supervisor would have recognized him if he arrived at the resort in a Maserati, McGilvary nodded his head yes and refused to answer any other questions, the report said.

After his arrest, McGilvary denied any involvement in the theft and said that wasn't him in the surveillance video from the Maserati dealership, the report said.

Boca Raton police spokeswoman Sandra Boonenberg said the Maserati was found Tuesday after a resident at a condominium recognized it parked outside. A picture posted on Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander's Facebook page showed him posing next to the Maserati, which was on a flatbed truck.
