Student accused of bringing loaded gun to Miami Northwestern Senior High School

Gun had been reported stolen, police say

MIAMI – A student was arrested Wednesday after he brought a loaded gun to Miami Northwestern Senior High School, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, another student told assistant principal Marie Robinson that Ke'mard Rashad Jacques, 18, had a gun on him.

Police said Jacques was taken to the main office, where a search was conducted by Robinson and other administration personnel at the school.

Police said a 9 mm Beretta handgun was found in Jacques's book bag. The gun was loaded with 15 rounds, plus one in the chamber, authorities said.

A records check revealed that the gun had been reported stolen.

Jacques was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm on school property and grand theft of a firearm.

A Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman praised the actions of the school employees in a statement to Local 10 News, saying "M-DCPS has systems in place to ensure potential threats to the safety and security of our students and staff are handled swiftly. This is a great example of how the quick-thinking actions of alert individuals can avert possibly tragic situations."

Jacques appeared in court Thursday, where a judge ordered him to be placed on house arrest.

In similar cases, students are generally recommended for expulsion. However, the final decision rests with the school board.
