Judge denies bond for students accused of bringing gun to school

Mother of 15-year-old girl disappointed by judge's decision

MIAMI – Four Miami Norland Senior High School students accused of bringing a loaded gun to the Miami Gardens school appeared in court on Saturday.

A Miami-Dade County judge denied bond for the students.

The mother of one of those students spoke to Local 10 News outside the courtroom.

"She's never been in no trouble," the mother said of her 15-year-old daughter.

The mother said she was disappointed by the judge's decision to keep her daughter behind bars.

"I don't feel like that's right for them to do that to her," she said.

Miami-Dade school police received an anonymous tip that a gun was on campus Friday. Police placed the school on lockdown while they searched the campus and found a loaded gun.

Miami Norland Senior High School student Kadeja Johnson said the school was on "code red" and students were in "first period all day long." The alert is supposed to be used when there is an armed intruder or an active shooter situation.

After finding the loaded gun, detectives questioned at least five students and arrested four teens.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokeswoman Daisy Gonzalez-Diego said the students were going to be charged with possessing a firearm on school property.

It's still unclear which student brought the gun to school, but police said, at some point, all four students had possession of the gun.

"I don't have a gun at my house," the mother said.
