Surveillance video captures gunman yelling at man cutting grass before fatal shooting

Good Samaritan shot while trying to defend victim, deputies say

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Surveillance video released Friday shows a man yelling at an elderly man who was cutting the grass near a Pembroke Park convenience store before the altercation escalated into a fatal shooting.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said Philip Antonino, 57, was walking back to his place of work about 9 a.m. Sept. 22 when he saw an elderly homeless man being berated by another man while cutting the grass in a field adjacent to the Kwik Stop at 5551 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd.

Deputies said Antonino told the man to back off.

"The suspect began engaging Mr. Antonino again with a barrage of curses and telling him that he was going to shoot him," Detective Valerian Perez said.

Authorities said moments later, the man pulled out a gun and shot Antonino multiple times.

A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crew took Antonino to a local hospital, where he died.

"He loved life, and he was about people and how he could help anybody," Antonino's wife, Anna Antonino, said.

Deputies said the gunman ran north on West 56th Avenue after the shooting.

Anna Antonino was left distraught and heartbroken after losing the love of her life.

"In the morning, he left home happy and we kissed, and he went to work like he always did, and he never came back," she said.

Anyone with information about his identity is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

"We have to get him off of the streets, because this is going to happen to somebody else," Anna Antonino said. "We cannot kill each other. We have to live in peace."

A reward of up to $3,000 is offered for information that leads to an arrest.
