Surveillance video captures thieves believed to have broken into vehicles in Marathon

9-mm Glock handgun stolen from 1 vehicle, deputies say

MARATHON, Fla. ā€“ Monroe County sheriff's deputies are searching for a group of thieves who broke into multiple vehicles overnight in Marathon.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said more than 10 vehicle burglaries were reported Friday morning all over Marathon, including on 95th Street, Tingler Avenue, Sombrero Beach Boulevard and Morton Street, on Grassy Key.

Herrin said the thieves got away with sunglasses, cash and electronics. A 9-mm Glock handgun was reported stolen from a vehicle on Morton Street.

Surveillance video from one of the homes shows the group of thieves, who appear to be teenage boys, with their faces partially covered by their shirts.

Herrin said all of the vehicles that were broken into had been left unlocked.

"We continue to remind people that these types of crimes are easily preventable," Sheriff Rick Ramsay said in a statement. "It is simple: just lock your car doors. In most cases, that is all it takes."

Anyone with information about the thieves' identities is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-346-TIPS.
