LAUDERHILL, Fla. – Police identified the man caught after a Friday chase involving Miami and Miami-Dade police officers as Keith Michel.
The 34-year-old fugitive was wanted in Lauderhill for nearly killing his girlfriend, who remained hospitalized in critical condition, police said. He "brutally" stabbed her with a knife and stole her car, police said.
Michel, of Fort Lauderdale, is facing an attempted murder charge in Lauderhill, but he stands to face more charges. Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes said Michel hit two police officers during an afternoon chase.
Before Miami police arrested him, he sped in a red Nissan Altima. After he crashed into a fence behind a restaurant near Northwest 119th Street and Northwest 11th Avenue, he also crashed into a police car, police said.
Michel has a lengthy criminal record in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Authorities consider him a "career criminal." And this wasn't the first time that he ran from police.
Miami-Dade County records show he tried to runaway from police in 2006 when he was charged with grand theft. In 2000, he was arrested for armed robbery. A year later, he was arrested for defrauding innkeeper. In 2003 and 2005, he was arrested for grand theft involving a vehicle, and in a separate incident later that year he was charged with robbery and carjacking.
Michel was in prison from 2006 to 2007. A few months after his release, Florida Department of Corrections records show Broward County deputies arrested him for a robbery and two counts of battery on a police officer.
He was back in prison in 2009 and was released in 2014.
