Suspect shot at by Miami-Dade police says he fled because of suspended license, police say

Raziel Binelo, 20, accused of trying to strike officers with stolen vehicle

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 20-year-old man who was shot at Monday night by Miami-Dade police officers near Dadeland Mall told detectives that he fled from the officers because his license was suspended, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, two officers spotted a stolen 1995 purple Cadillac about 6:40 p.m. and attempted to pull over the driver, identified Tuesday as Raziel Binelo.

Police said Binelo fled the scene and led the officers to the Ledges Condominiums at 8315 SW 72nd Ave.

Police said Binelo reversed the car at a high rate of speed toward the officers and struck a parked vehicle.

The officers fired at Binelo to avoid being struck by the vehicle. Binelo was not injured in the shooting, police said.

Binelo drove the stolen Cadillac away from the complex and eventually stopped at Southwest 84th Street and 72nd Court, and ran away, the report said.

"(I) went back onto my balcony and saw a man with no shirt on," Virginia Schroer, who witnessed the incident, said. "I pointed to where he was like 5 minutes later, (and)  I see all the cops running and they caught him."

Binelo was taken into custody a short time later and was taken to the Kendall District station for questioning.

Police said Binelo claimed that he fled from the officers because his driver's license was suspended.

Police said Binelo claimed that he only reversed the car when the officers fired at him, but bodycam footage from the officers shows that they fired at him after he had already reversed the vehicle toward them.

Binelo faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing and eluding police, resisting an officer and driving with a suspended license.

He is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
