Teens charged as adults in fatal shooting of man in Fort Lauderdale

14-year-old boys shot victim multiple times inside car, police say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Two 14-year-old boys were charged as adults Monday in the fatal shooting of a man in Fort Lauderdale.

The shooting was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. April 19 in the 2400 block of Northwest 22nd Street.

The suspects, Dallas Holston and Sedrick Joseph, were arrested a week later.

"He's a little kid in a man's world, so I'm hoping he's not going to be in there much longer," Holston's attorney, Randall Haas, said Tuesday as he was joined by the boy's mother and other family members in court.

Joseph also appeared in court, but no relatives were present.

"He is 14 years old (and) in seventh grade, middle school. He has no prior record," Joseph's public defender Melissa Donoho said.

Police said the victim, Gary Martin, 52, was inside a dark-colored car with the two teens when an altercation ensued.

Police said Martin was shot multiple times and the two teens ran away.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

A motive is unclear, but authorities said they believe the shooting was premeditated.

Holston is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. Joseph is charged with second-degree murder.

Both have been ordered to remain in jail without bond.
