Woman steals car from 'Uber Man,' drives it to Florida Keys, deputies say

Eleanor Smith tells deputies she paid man $60 to borrow car

Eleanor Smith is accused of stealing a car in Homestead and driving to the Florida Keys.

ISLAMORADA, Fla. ā€“ A 42-year-old woman was arrested Monday after stealing a car from someone she knows as "Uber Man" in Homestead and driving it south to the Florida Keys, deputies said.

Eleanor Smith was stopped Monday afternoon by Monroe County sheriff's deputies who spotted the stolen Toyota Prius traveling south near mile marker 87 in Islamorada.

Smith told deputies that she'd just moved to Florida from Rhode Island and had borrowed the car from "Uber Man," who lives at a motel in Homestead, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said. The man earned his nickname because he drives lots of different cars.

Smith said she paid the man $60 to borrow the car and didn't know that it was stolen, Herrin said.

Deputies arrested Smith on a charge of grand theft auto. Once at the jail, deputies found a driver's license in someone else's name, along with four credit cards in other people's names, Herrin said.

Smith claimed the license and credit cards belonged to friends and family members, but the woman whose license was in Smith's possession told deputies that nobody had permission to have it, Herrin said.
