Doctor accused of killing dog found dead in home

Isaias Lerner, MD, charged with animal cruelty with intent to kill

BAY HARBOR ISLANDS, Fla. - A family member found the body of a 66-year-old doctor charged with animal cruelty with intent to kill after police say he killed a dog after repeatedly hitting it on the head with a hammer before stabbing it with a screwdriver.

Miami-Dade police confirm the body of Doctor Isaias Lerner was found in his home with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"I'm very close to him ... a very close friend of his," Dr. Jean-Jacques Edderai said. "We called each other brothers."
Isaias Lerner, MD, was arrested Tuesday. Several police cars were seen outside Lerner's home in Bay Harbor Islands on Thursday evening.

"I don't know," Edderai added. "I called him last night.  But this is not him. What happened last night is not him."

"He's a nice person," said housekeeper Dell Borbosa said.

According to an arrest affidavit, witnesses told police they saw a dog tied to a tree outside Lerner home in the 10300 block of East Broadview Drive on Tuesday morning. The witnesses said an older man, identified as Lerner, repeatedly hit the dog in the head with a hammer and then stabbed the dog with a screwdriver.
