COOPER CITY, Fla. – U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., hosted a campaign event Wednesday in Cooper City, where she was joined by her friend, former congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
The pair talked about gun control to the crowds that gathered to see them.
"We must never stop fighting," Giffords said. "Fight, fight, fight, people."
Her words were met with applause.
Giffords and her husband, Capt. Mark Kelly, know the dangers of gun violence all too well as Giffords was shot during an event with her constituents in 2011.
Six people died in that incident.
"All of you have to do is bring a bill to the floor," Wasserman Schultz said. "We're not even asking you to vote for it. Just bring the bill to the floor and let's have the discussion."
Wasserman Schultz is back in the spotlight after she stepped down from the Democratic National Committee after a leaked email scandal.
She will face primary challenger, Tim Canova, for a debate this weekend.
Wasserman Shultz told Local 10 News reporter Michael Putney that she will only do one debate.
Canova wants more than one 15-minute debate to take place.
"After four months of dodging debates and running scared, Wasserman Schultz has finally agreed to debates," he said in a statement. "We were hoping for at least three, two-hour debates, but for the time being, this will have to suffice."
