PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – People who decided to wait for Election Day to cast their ballots saw short lines Tuesday morning at many polling locations in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
"(I waited) not too long. Like 10 to 15 minutes," one woman said at a North Miami fire station.
South Florida's elections officials said many people opted for early voting, including 55 percent of voters in Miami-Dade County and more than half of the 1.2 million registered voters in Broward County.
Broward elections officials said they are expecting light to moderate traffic at polling locations on Tuesday, but want as many people to vote as possible.
"The workers are there. They're ready and they've been trained to know what to do to serve the voters. And we just want the voters to turnout. I'd love to see a minimum of 300,000 voters go out today," Broward County supervisor of elections Dr. Brenda Snipes said.
Snipes estimates that at least 800,000 voters in Broward County will have voted by the end of Tuesday.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) made her rounds around the polls Tuesday, saying that she's confident that Democrats will win the day.
"We blew the doors off of turnout in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, the two counties that I had the privilege of representing in early voting," the congresswoman said. "We need to do that to be able to really go into Election Day strong, and I'm actually feeling really good. I think we're going to see Florida go blue tonight."
Local 10 News reporter Ian Margol spoke to one voter, who said that there will still be a lot of work ahead for this country no matter the outcome of the election.
"They're going to have a lot of work to do to get everybody back together after this thing is over," Paul Sutton said.
Miami-Dade County elections officials also said early turnout was big enough that slightly less than one-third of voters in the county are expected to cast their ballots on Election Day.
Several of the voters Local 10 News reporter Ben Kennedy spoke to Tuesday said they waited until Election Day to decide what presidential candidate they would vote for.
"What's important is all of it. Security, taxes, economy, humanity, people, jobs -- everything," one woman said. "I didn't decide until this morning. I really didn't decide until I got in there."
More than 500 voting precincts in Broward and 591 polling locations in Miami-Dade County will be open on Tuesday. If you still have an absentee ballot at home, drop it off at the Supervisor of Elections Office or take it to a polling place to be voided and vote in person on Tuesday.
