Family mourns 18-year-old Miramar shooting victim

Funeral of teen killed 2 days before 1st day at Broward College set for Saturday

It was a Thursday night, Jermiel "Miel" Gianna Joseph and Phil Jonathan Nelson were passengers in a car on Island Drive and Miramar Parkway. About 10:35 p.m., bullets started flying.

Joseph, 18, and Nelson, 19,  were bleeding. Doctors declared both teens dead Aug. 19 at Memorial West Hospital, where Joseph was born.

Detectives haven't caught the killer. On Friday, Joseph's parents, Ronictor and Sasha Joseph, couldn't hold back tears. They had just celebrated his graduation from Charles Flanagan High School June 5th. And two days before he was supposed to start his first semester at Broward College, he was gone.

Joseph had big dreams. He wanted to transfer to the University of Central Florida to earn a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications and Journalism.

"Jemiel was amazing. He was loving and attentive to his mom, very affectionate," his cousin Brittany Anderson said. " He was a very family oriented person."

At his funeral, his family described him as well spoken, confident and respectful. His grandmother Sandra Watkis-Grant and mother treasure a messages he sent them.

I just want to say I appreciate you beautiful women so much, and I don't know where I would be without you. I love you ladies so much and I couldn't ask for a better family. Thank you so much for everything you do and did for me. It means the world to me.

No one would have guessed it would be his last.

Aside from his parents, his siblings Toni and Ashton survive him. Joseph's family and friends were at a viewing at Fred Hunters Memorial Funeral Home, 6301 Taft St., in Hollywood, Friday. The funeral service was set at 11 a.m., Saturday at Memorial Gardens North, 3001 N. 72 St.
