Family pleas for info on drunk driving suspect

Police: Juan Velez killed in crash with Maria Chaison

MIAMI - A family asked for help finding a drunk driving suspect involved in a crash that killed a 25-year-old man in March.

The crash happened on Northwest 21st Street and 27th Avenue on March 3.

According to investigators, Juan Manuel Velez, 25, was driving north on NW 27th Avenue when Maria Chaison, who was traveling south, turned left in front of Velez. Police believe Chaison was headed to Calder Casino.

Velez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died.

"For her to take off and not turn herself in -- I can honestly say she don't have a heart," Erica Velez, the victim's sister, said Thursday.

Police said Chaison had a blood alcohol content of 0.2 at the time of the crash. A warrant is out for her arrest.

Investigators believe Chaison took a bus to Houston, where she has family, and are now hoping the public can help find her.

"Now we know life is short. We never thought in a million years we'd lose him," said Velez. "We were supposed to grow old together and now he's gone."

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Miami-Dade police at 305-471-1780.
