PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – A Florida parrot rescue organization fell victim to a bird heist Tuesday, losing 28 parrots and cockatoos to a thief or thieves overnight.
The crime happened at the Parrot Outreach Society in Punta Gorda, on the state’s southwest coast.
“Our power was cut off before entering and 28 of our beloved birds were stolen,” the rescue said in a Facebook post. “We are absolutely devastated and are asking all our followers to be on the lookout for our babies.”
Local police confirmed they were investigating.
“We ask all breeders to be on the lookout and please keep us in your thoughts,” the rescue said. “These birds mean the world to all of our volunteers and we are all heartbroken.”
The Parrot Outreach Society also posted photos of some of the stolen birds.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information on the case.
