Boat disappears during search for missing teens

14-year-olds Perry Cohen, Austin Stephanos missing for 10 days

JUPITER, Fla. – A boat that two 14-year-old boys were on before they disappeared more than a week ago is missing, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Monday.

The capsized 19-foot boat was found off the coast of Daytona Beach, but Coast Guard officials said they do not know the boat's current location.

TowBoatUS said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission contacted it to retrieve the boat about 67 nautical miles east of the Ponce De Leon Inlet. But the company said it's no longer in the area where the Coast Guard last spotted it.

The Coast Guard does not normally tow boats to shore. Coast Guard officials said that after a diver determined that no one was on board, officials marked the location and kept searching.

Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos, both of Tequesta, vanished 10 days ago. They were last seen off the coast of Jupiter.

Friends of the teens said the boys were headed to the Bahamas, although their parents allowed them to fish only in the Jupiter Inlet.

The Coast Guard searched nearly 50,000 square nautical miles from Florida to North Carolina before calling off the search last Friday.
