DAVIE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified one of two people killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Interstate 75 in Davie.
Salvador Diaz, 20, was a passenger in the 2012 Volkswagen Passat that was involved in the crash about 3 a.m.
A 2013 Kia Optima collided with the Volkswagen in the southbound lanes of I-75 between Stirling Road and Sheridan Street.
The driver of the Kia struck the Volkswagen from behind. The Kia overturned and the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and died, according to the FHP.
The driver who died "may have been hit by a couple of vehicles," FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky told Local 10 News.
The impact pushed the Volkswagen off the highway and into a ditch. Three victims were taken Memorial Hospital Miramar.
Troopers identified the injured as Ricardo Hernandez, 19, Juan Almazan, 18, and Andrew Rios, 19. Hernandez was the driver of the Volkswagen, and Almazan, Rios and Diaz were his passengers. Diaz was wearing a seatbelt.
The stretch of I-75 was closed for about five hours while deputies investigated the crash. The FHP hasn't determined the cause of the crash.
