MIAMI – Hurricane Matthew prompted plans to open shelters in Broward County on Wednesday evening.
The shelters are available for all residents, especially the homeless population, people in evacuation zones with children, people with special needs and their guardians and people with pets, authorities said.

Rock Island Elementary and Arthur Ashe Middle School, 1701 NW 23rd Ave., in Fort Lauderdale.

New Renaissance Middle School, 10701 Miramar Blvd., Miramar.
Watkins Elementary School, 3520 S. W. 52nd Ave., Pembroke Park.
West Broward High School, 500 NW 209 Ave., Pembroke Pines.
Falcon Cove Middle School, 4251 Bonaventure Blvd., in Weston.
Pet-friendly shelter: Millenium Middle School, 5803 NW 94th Ave., in Tamarac. To be accepted at the shelter, pet owners must have documentation to show the pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccination and licensing. The pets must be crated and pet owners cannot stay with the animals.
