Gov. Rick Scott calls for special election to fill Daisy Baez's seat in Florida House

Special primary election to be held Feb.Ā 20

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ā€“ Gov.Ā Rick Scott signed an executive order ThursdayĀ callingĀ for a special electionĀ for District 114 of the Florida House of Representatives.

Rep.Ā Daisy Baez, D-Coral Gables, resigned last week and was forced to abandon her Democratic race for Florida Senate District 40. She pleaded guilty to perjury Wednesday for lying on a voter-registration form.Ā

Under the terms of a plea deal, BaezĀ agreed toĀ payĀ a $1,000 fine, completeĀ an ethics course and serve a year of probation. She is not allowed to seek public office while on probation.

Without Baez, Democrats only have 40 members in the 120-member Florida House. Baez was elected in November.Ā The Miami Herald reported in May that she was not a resident of the district that she was representing.Ā 

The special primary election will be held Feb.Ā 20Ā and a special election will be held May 1, according to theĀ Supervisor of Elections in Miami-Dade County.
