He told Broward Sheriff's Office deputies that he was driving about 45 miles per hour, down the center lane. He said the man was in the middle of the road when the collision happened near the Publix Super Market at Deerfield Mall.

"The pedestrian crossed into the car's path," Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Joy Oglesby wrote in a report.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took the wounded man to Broward Health North where doctors later pronounced him dead. Detectives hadn't been able to notify his family late Friday night.

"Detectives don't believe impairment, excessive speed or mechanical malfunction contributed to the crash," Oglesby said.

Deputies were asking anyone with information to call Detective Michael Wiley at 954-321-4840.
