Developer plans condominium with synagogue

Costa Hollywood to have 307 units, gym, spa, restaurants

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A developer plans to build an upscale condominium in Hollywood with a synagogue.

Hollywood Beach is best known for its historic boardwalk and Art Deco motels. But in a few years, it will look a little different.

One of the newest projects for the beach is Costa Hollywood. It will feature 307 luxury residences with a gym, spa, and several upscale restaurants.

But what really makes this property special is the synagogue and kosher restaurant on site.

"It's a big deal for us," said David Malka.

Malka said the amenities that cater to the Jewish community made his purchasing decision easy.

"We will be able to have kosher food, synagogue, and be with the community," Malka said. "We will be able to spend the holidays in a joyful environment."

The goal is to attract international Jewish buyers who don't want to sacrifice their religion for vacation-style living.

"With the sales, we see it is very diverse, very international," said developer Moses Bensusan. "I think that Hollywood was ignored by a lot of developers and this is going to be the first project."

While the building isn't completely kosher, Rabbi Steve Karro thinks it's a great concept, filling a niche demand for the Jewish population.

"It's close to the beach," said Karro with the Torah Ethics and Culture Center. "People are going for vacation to combine spirituality with having fun. It will be something very convenient."

Karro will hold services at the condo, and for those who live on the beach, it will be an easier walk to temple.

"To help this community and to gather together and to bring God to this location, it's amazing," he said.

"Instead of walking to synagogue on a day where it's 90 degrees, it's great to stay at a hotel where there is a synagogue," Malka said.

So far, about 50 percent of units have been sold. Prices start at a $250,000 and go up from there.
