Funeral planned for Coral Springs soldier killed in Afghanistan

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. - A funeral service will be held today for a Coral Springs soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. Warrant Officer Joseph Lee Schiro, 27, died from small arms fire on October 6.

Services in his honor are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Christ Fellowship Church in Royal Palm Beach.

He will be buried at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth.

Schiro was a highly decorated member of the Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets. He was serving his fourth deployment in Afghanistan at the time of his death.

On Sunday, more than 100 soldiers from the Florida Army National Guard gathered at Palm Beach International Airport for a solemn salute as Schiro's body returned home.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
