Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit progresses as Zoo Miami expands

Exhibit to open by this time next year

MIAMI – Local 10 News got a tour of the Miami Zoo Friday to see how much progression has been made on the $50 million project to expand the zoo.

"I have been here now for 36 years at the zoo, and this is most certainly the most transformational project that has been involved in the history of the zoo," Zoo Miami spokesman Ron Magill said.

Florida: Mission Everglades is currently under construction at the zoo.

"We want people to come out here see this, and want to see more," Magill said.

Florida: Mission Everglades is meant to immerse visitors into the different habitats found in the heart of South Florida. The front entry plaza will be the new entrance to the zoo and the flamingos that will live there are now staying in a temporary area elsewhere at the zoo.

"The front entrance just gives that first impression that you're entering a world class facility," Magill said.

More than 50 species will be exhibited in the expanded area, from a relaxing water feature with wading birds to a thrilling encounter with Florida alligators.

"You were walking through these biomes and there's a hanging bridge, so you walk over a little rope bridge that's going to dangle you over the flippin' alligators, so it gives you a sense of a thrill that way," Magill said.

The American crocodile and underwater tube crawl takes you inside their world like never before.

"Kids can crawl through this tube," Magill said. "You are surrounded, crocodiles over here, same thing with the otters, you're in this beautiful covered area, shaded luxurious. You're in the middle of this incredible world."

One of Magill's favorite parts will bring you face to face with bears that will alternate with Florida panthers.

"So you can come out and put your face to the window and the panther will come out and you go, 'Whoa!' The panther is right in your face," Magill said.

The new entryway area is expected to open March 2016. The entire Florida Mission Everglades exhibit is scheduled to be open by this time next year.
