Sgt. Carl Zogby said the body was badly decomposed.

"They found a lady's body without her head thrown in the trash," Jessica Alt, who works nearby, said.

Late in the day, investigators donned protective clothes to search through part of the waste facility as they searched for the head and any other evidence.

Police haven't said much about what was found, including whether the body was brought in by a dump truck or whether someone buried the body there.

Waste Connections provides trash services to a number of cities and private businesses across South Florida.

"The cherry picker that picks up the trash put it in the trailer where they can haul it. When he picked it up, is when he saw the person's body," a worker at the facility, Mitchell Green, said.

Authorities have not identified the body.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
