8-month-old injured in Hialeah when debris from ceiling falls on boy

Baby taken to hospital with facial injuries

HIALEAH, Fla. – An infant was injured Friday morning when some debris from his bedroom ceiling landed on the boy.

The baby was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with some facial injuries, Hialeah Fire Department Capt. Cesar Espinosa said.

No other injuries were reported.

The roof of the building at 767 W. Second Ave. was under repair and covered with tarps.

"You got a little water coming in, coming in, coming in, the next thing you know, the whole ceiling comes down," Capt. David Rodriguez said of the morning rain that is believed to have caused the collapse.

"The people were working on the roof and it rained today in the morning, and the water came off," Eddy Hernandez, whose apartment was damaged, said.

Family members told Local 10 News that Leandro Verejano was in bed when a portion of the ceiling fell on him. Rodriguez said the 8-month-old was evaluated at the scene and taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The boy's grandfather got a cut to the nose.

Inspectors deemed the building uninhabitable.

"Everything is no good. Clothes, $200 maybe of food in the fridge that is not good because no light, no power -- the food is no good," Hernandez said.

Espinosa said a total of 12 units were affected and 21 people were displaced.

Authorities said the building owner will provide temporary shelter for all affected residents in a local hotel until the building is repaired and deemed safe to move back in to.
