MARGATE, Fla. – Drivers from Sullivan Electric and Pump on Monday found a human skull in a canal near the ninth hole of the Oriole Executive Golf Course on 8000 Margate Boulevard.
The drivers were doing maintenance work on an irrigation line when they saw a clay pot in the water, police said. The clay pot contained the remains of a human skull and other trinkets.
"It's unknown whether or not the skull had been acquired for ritualistic purposes or if it's in fact the skull of a homicide victim," said Margate Police Lt. Andy Zetteck.
The skull was sent to the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office. Homicide detectives were investigating.
"I've been here 16 years -- never seen anything like it," said a golf course employee.
