MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A man drowned while swimming off a beach on Friday night, according to Miami Beach authorities.
Miami Beach Fire Rescue, Miami Beach police officers and Marine Patrol responded to the beach on 43rd Street and Collins Avenue about 7:30 p.m.
"Five swimmers were in distress," Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said in a statement. "Two females were able to swim to shore."
A Good Samaritan pulled one of the swimmers out of the water in time for an MBFR paramedic to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to Rodriguez. An ambulance took the man to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.
A police officer and a firefighter got in the water and rescued another man. They pulled him onto a Marine Patrol vessel and transferred him to Fire Rescue. They also took him and a third man who managed to swim to shore on his own to Mount Sinai.
The two women did not require medical attention.
"It is important to note the dangers of swimming in rough waters and where no lifeguards are present," Rodriguez said.
Meteorologist Betty Davis asked swimmers to watch out for rip currents on Saturday.
