NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. - A police officer conducting a routine traffic stop shot a homeless man who began throwing pieces of cinder block at her patrol car, said police.

It happened on Northwest 56 Street and 22nd Avenue about 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Police said the officer has pulled over a red Ford Focus and was sitting in her car when the homeless man approached her pushing a shopping cart and started yelling.  According to witnesses, the officer tried to diffuse the situation when the man lost his temper and started throwing chunks of concrete at the officer's patrol car.

"The guy was just throwing multiple things at her out of the cart. I don't know what he had in the cart but he was throwing rocks, or whatever he had in the cart at the lady," said a witness who identified herself as Keisha B. ""It's self defense. She was trying to make sure she wasn't going to get shot or hurt."

At least one window on the patrol car was shattered. The homeless man was shot in the leg. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

In the aftermath of the incident, a dog that was with a man in the crowd that gathered bit a Miami Dade Police detective who was on assisting at the scene. Another officer shot and killed the dog.  The detective was treated for a bite wound.

The female officer who shot the homeless man was not hurt.
