1 dead, 1 injured during shooting near West Gables; alleged gunman dead

Second victim listed in critical condition, police say

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Madlin Guardado, 39, was working on Saturday at the Latin Cafeteria Restaurant in Miami-Dade when she was fatally shot.

Her sister, Yenat Guardado, 38, was also wounded in the restaurant at the Blue Gables Plaza, 7360 Coral Way, in the Coral Terrace neighborhood between West Gables and Westchester.

Erika Benitez, a spokeswoman for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, said paramedics found Madlin dead. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Felipe Lay said paramedics took Yenat to the Kendall Regional Trauma Center in critical condition.

Detective Robin Pinkard said the suspected gunman fled in a green Jeep Cherokee at about 12:15 p.m. Police said he was found inside his vehicle around 3:35 p.m. at the intersection of 40th Street and Southwest 112 Avenue. He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A man who was outside of the restaurant said he was related to both women, who were sisters. Witnesses told police officers they saw the driver of the Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot, before they heard the gunshots and saw dozens running out of the restaurant.
