TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Five Miami-Dade nursing homes have ignored a state order to submit plans to ensure each facility is able to maintain a comfortable temperature in the event of a power loss.
Justin Senior, secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), announced 23 nursing homes across Florida failed to submit plans required by Emergency Rule 59AER17-A by the Oct. 31 deadline.

The fIve Miami-Dade nursing homes that did not submit plans are:
- Coral Reef Nursing & Rehabilitation Center
- Hialeah Shores Nursing and Rehab Center
- Oceanside Extended Care Center
- Riviera Health Resort
- University Plaza Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
The Emergency Rule was put into effect shortly after 12 residents died due to intense heat at the Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills following Hurricane Irma. The facility lost air conditioning for 3 days following the storm.
The rule establishes a process for the AHCA to ensure nursing homes have sufficient equipment to keep ambient temperature at 80 degrees or less for at least 96 hours after the loss of electricity.
The facilities that have yet to respond will be subjected to a fine of $1,000 per day or have their licenses revoked starting on Nov. 15 if they fail to submit a plan.
All Broward County nursing homes met the deadline.
