After torture, rape at Keys resort, man threatens to burn, kill woman, deputies say

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies arrest Hialeah man

ISLAMORADA, Fla. – A 28-year-old mother's refusal to show Jorge Moreno her phone turned into a four-hour nightmare Thursday. The woman told deputies she was raped and tortured at the Amara Cay Resort in Islamorada.

The woman told Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies that Moreno, 34, held a towel over her face and ran water over the towel, so she could feel like she was drowning. He poured tequila over her and threatened to set her on fire, but he didn't because he couldn't find a lighter, she said.

Instead, she said, Moreno made her lay beside him on the bed while he slept.

The incident began after she refused to let Moreno see her phone. She said Moreno beat her and repeatedly raped her.

Once they left the resort early Friday morning, she said, Moreno threatened to push her off the Card Sound Bridge and kill her child and parents.

Moreno eventually dropped her off at her parents' home in Cutler Bay and then returned to Islamorada. She reported the incident, and Moreno was arrested Friday afternoon.

Deputies arrested the Hialeah man on charges of attempted murder, false imprisonment, sexual battery and battery. Moreno was being held without bond in a Monroe County jail.
