Key Largo pharmacy employee accused of stealing prescription drugs

Co-worker notices oxycodone pills missing from customer's bottle, deputies say

KEY LARGO, Fla. – A Key Largo pharmacy employee was arrested Tuesday night for stealing prescription medication while she was on duty, authorities said.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said a supervisor at the CVS Pharmacy at the 99.4 mile marker of U.S. Highway 1 called authorities to report that Heather Burckhard, 53, had taken oxycodone from a prescription that belonged to a customer.

Herrin said another employee reported the theft to his supervisor when he noticed that someone had tampered with the packaging.

The employee said the bag had been separated from its label and the bag was crumpled. When he double-checked the prescription, which he had prepared, he discovered that some pills were missing from the bottle.

The man said he confronted Burckhard, who confessed to taking the pills.

Herrin said Burckhard took the pills out of her pocket and handed them to her co-worker.

Surveillance video from the pharmacy shows Burckhard stealing the medication, Herrin said.

Burckhard was arrested on charges of grand theft and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
