North Miami Beach paratrooper found dead in Fort Bragg barracks

Army investigating cause of death

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The U.S. Army is investigating after a paratrooper from Florida was found dead on Saturday in his barracks at Fort Bragg.

Spc. Carlton Butler, a 22-year-old infantryman, grew up in North Miami Beach and joined the Army in June 2014, the Army said.

"Carlton was a patriotic, energetic, and motivated young man, who -- just recently -- had been promoted up to a Gun Team Leader position in Bravo Company, a position he rightly earned," Lt. Col. Graham White, Butler's commanding officer, wrote in a Facebook post.

Army did not release any details about what could have caused Butler's death.

"I humbly ask for your discretion, patience and decorum while investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding Spc. Butler's untimely death this past Saturday," White said.

Butler was assigned to Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that Butler was the second soldier to die at Fort Bragg in less than a week.

The newspaper reported that Pfc. Nicholas Martinez was also found dead in his barracks room on Thursday.
