DAVIE, Fla. - Police continue to investigate a hit-and-run crash in Davie that killed an elderly woman on a walker.

Rita Chiero, 86, died at the hospital shortly after police said she was struck on southwest 33rd street in the Everglades Lakes mobile home community.

Detectives say the driver left the scene.

"I can forgive an accident. I can't forgive when you left her there like she was -- like road kill," said son Joseph Chiero.

Orange spray paint marks where the great-grandmother was struck and dragged several feet on the pavement.

Chiero's family hopes surveillance cameras at the community's only exit will provide police with critical video showing who might have been leaving shortly after the time of the crash.

On Tuesday, the homeowner's association held a private meeting about the crash.

Family members said Chiero endured a heart condition and beat cancer twice. Her son, Joseph, said he was heartbroken that she did not survive what was supposed to be just a routine: her morning walk.

"No one deserves to go like that," he said.

Davie police are investigating.
