Drugs, suspects arrived in Key West on Monday

KEY WEST, Fla. – The United States Coast Guard is celebrating a massive drug bust on the high seas.

The Coast Guard reports that one of its aircraft detected a suspicious boat near Isla de Tortue, Haiti on Dec. 27.

The crew on the Coast Guard Cutter Bear responded and said they saw the people on the suspicious boat threw packages overboard before trying to get away.

The Coast Guard gave chase, arrested eight people and recovered the packages, which they said tested positive for marijuana.

In all, 550 pounds of pot was recovered. The drugs are worth a half-million dollars on the street.

The drugs and suspects arrived at the Coast Guard station in Key West on Monday.
