WESTON, Fla. – Two Florida State University students from South Florida were killed over the weekend in a crash on Florida's Turnpike.
On her YouTube channel, Valentina Martinez, 19, shared a passion with viewers, offering make-up tutorials in her spare time.
But the 20-year-old was also a hard-working full-time student at Florida State University.
She was likely on her way home Sunday to Weston during spring break when she was killed in a chain-reaction crash on the Turnpike right outside of Orlando.
"She was a dear person to us, with me especially because when I first came here she helped me a lot," Martinez's former manager, Abel Garcia, said.
Garcia was Martinez's former boss at the Hungry Howie's restaurant in Weston, where she worked for two years before the move to college.
Garcia is now setting up a memorial fund in Martinez's memory.
"Valentina was a real nice girl," Garcia said. "She had a lot of hopes (and) aspirations. She wanted to be a doctor. When she was here, she was a very good worker. She was always happy, always had a smile on her face."
Authorities said seven cars were involved in Sunday's pile-up wreck.
Police said a pickup truck slammed into the back of the vehicle Martinez was in, killing her and Antonio Mesa, 18, also of Weston and a fellow FSU student.
GoFundMe pages have been set up for the families of both of the victims as well as for Aztli Jimenez and Maria Cardenas, who were severely injured in the wreck.
"Anything should help in this situation, so we're just chipping in a little bit," Garcia said.
The money raised on the GoFundMe pages will go toward funeral expenses for Martinez and Mesa and for medical expenses for the survivors.
