Gas line ruptures in Weston, causing nearby businesses to evacuate

Repair crews are on site working to fix underground line

WESTON, Fla. – An underground natural gas line in Weston ruptured on Monday, forcing several nearby businesses to evacuate.

Repair crews from TECO Gas Co. were working to fix the line near Indian Trace and North Park Drive. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane said he expected the work to take several hours. The gas line is about 7 feet underground, complicating the repair work, he said.
As a precaution, the TECO crew was joined by a hazardous-materials crew and a technical rescue team, Kane said.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue closed the intersection, and the nearby Taco Bell and Shell gas station were evacuated. However, no residential areas were affected by the leak, Kane said.
The leak was first reported about 5 p.m. Monday after a construction crew struck the gas line while digging in the parking lot adjacent to the Taco Bell, Kane said.
