DANIA BEACH, Fla. - A woman and her 2-year-old grandson were critically injured after a car hit them in Dania Beach on Friday afternoon.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said the woman and the child were hit by a car as they crossed the street near Dania Beach Boulevard and U.S. 1.

The impact was so hard that the car was seriously damaged.

The woman and the child were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, both in critical condition.

The driver did stay at the scene.

"At this point, it's an ongoing investigation. It does appear to be an accident," said Mike Jachles, of BSO. "We don't know where in the roadway the woman and the child were at the time of the crash. There was a crosswalk near the crash scene, so they could have very well been in that crosswalk or near the crosswalk. There was a light there. We don't know. The investigators haven't determined which way the light had the right of way."

The driver does not face any charges so far.
