Fort Lauderdale firefighters rescue baby sea turtles stuck in storm drain

Hatchlings left in care of Sea Turtle Oversight Protection

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ Firefighters came to the rescue of some baby sea turtles that were stuck in a storm drain Tuesday night in Fort Lauderdale.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Timothy Heiser said firefighters were called to Atlantic Boulevard, where they were told baby sea turtles were stuck in drains.

Firefighters and volunteers from the Sea Turtle Oversight Protection searched the drains and found groups of stranded turtles struggling to free themselves.

Heiser said turtle hatchlings frequently get disoriented this time of year and wander in the wrong direction.

The turtles were rescued and left in the care of the Sea Turtle Oversight Protection group.
