Free shipping day isn’t so much like, “Sound the alarms! This is your one and only chance to save $7.99!”

It’s more along the lines of, thousands of online retailers offering free shipping with the promise that they'll deliver your order before Christmas. This is a great way to finish up your holiday shopping without having to brave the mall or head out to that big-box store that you just know is going to be jam-packed.

Simply put, it’s because these online companies like you, and want you to have nice things.

(Well, we made that last part up, but it’s fine, right?)

A site called lifewire.com says that free shipping day isn’t new -- in fact, it’s been around for 10 years. Maybe you’ll stumble upon a site you’ve never shopped at before, or maybe your Christmas shopping is done, and you’re ready for a Black Friday-esque deal to enjoy all on your own. Regardless, let’s get down to the specifics.

Target, for example, will offer free two-day shipping with no minimum purchase required. Walmart will give you almost the same offer if you spend $35 or more. On freeshippingday.com, you can filter by featured coupons, sort through free shipping codes and browse through the participating retailers. At last check, 308 stores or businesses had coupons available.

According to LifeWire, last year’s participating stores included Target, Staples, American Eagle Outfitters, Ann Taylor, Aeropostale, Toys R Us, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Bealls, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Brookstone, Cabela's, Carter's, Chico's, Charlotte Russe, Coldwater Creek, Crate & Barrel, Dillard's, Forever 21, GameStop, JCPenney, J. Crew, Kmart, Kohl's, Macy's, Overstock, PetSmart, REI, Sephora, Sears, The Children's Place, Walmart and Cost Plus World Market.

Some retailers announce their participation early and others wait until the last second. Visit the website again as the week winds down to check back on whether your favorite store will hop on board.
